“Nutritional Causes: Deficiencies or Imbalances: Horses need adequate minerals in the correct balance to have healthy hooves. Sulfur is especially important because it is a disulfide bond that holds the hoof laminae to the coffin bone. If your horse suffers from poor hoof quality it is important to analyze the nutritional content of your hay before adding expensive supplements. If analyzing your hay is not an option then consider giving your horse a food-based supplement…, which provides a very broad range of trace minerals in a balanced form that your horse can easily assimilate. Biotin is another nutrient that is important for hoof health (Notes/Editorials from Jessica: you can find naturally occurring Biotin in Rose Hips) if your horse has plenty of beneficial bacteria in his gut, these bacteria will (should) produce sufficient biotin. (but not always and there is no way to test if he has sufficient gut bacteria. You can only do this by adding the pre- and pro-biotics daily that you would find in Pro-Zyme or Pro-Zyme+!).
It is better to support your horse’s good gut bacteria by feeding pre- or pro-biotics than feeding biotin because the healthy bacteria does so much more for your horse, including keeping his immune system strong. (It also helps him to digest and assimilate his feed stuffs more readily so he benefits fully from what you feed.)
Overfeeding: Besides making your horse fat, giving your horse too much feed that is high in starch will cause a shift in the bacterial population in your horse’s hindgut (or cecum). Normally the cecum is designed to digest only fiber but if undigested starch makes it past the small intestine into the hindgut, the fiber-digesting bacteria that live in the cecum die off and the starch-digesting bacteria take over. This shift can be devastating to your horse because it causes toxins to be released into his bloodstream that, in turn, cause an enzyme to be released that breaks down the laminae in the hoof wall. Well-known hoof expert Pete Ramey believes that this is nature’s way of allowing excessively long hoof walls to break off easily if the wild horse happens to move into a grazing situation with high sugar content forage. In the wild horse this bounty would be a temporary situation but with domesticated horses long-term high starch or sugar diets can cause chronic hoof problems that may eventually progress to laminitis.
Hoof Wall Infections: Many types of fungus and bacteria have been blamed for hoof wall separation or “white line” disease but in reality these pathogens are probably simply taking advantage of the environment created in the foot when the hoof wall attachments become weak from another cause. Once the pathogen is in place, however, to promote healthy hoof growth you may need to treat your horse’s hooves even after the underlying cause has been corrected. Very minor hoof wall infections respond to a topical mix of 1 ounce tea tree oil diluted in 16 ounces of apple cider vinegar. Deeper infections must be treated more aggressively. The best product I have found for persistent white line infections is White Lightning (I personally like to use Clear Trax). This product is applied under a wrap or within an airtight soaking boot and it releases a chlorine gas that penetrates deep into the hoof tissue. It does not affect healthy tissue and the treatment should be done once a week until healthy hoof attachments have grown all the way down and there is no separation or stretching showing in the white line. Horses that don’t respond to treatment for hoof infections and careful management may have a weak immune system and treatment will need to be focused there to see results.” (Including products like Pro-Zyme+, Rose Hips, Beta Glucan, and Colostrum)
Notes About Things You Use in Your Yard That Are Hazardous:
1. If your animals and children play in your yard, or even if you simply don’t want to hurt the squirrels, birds, butterflies and bees that do, be very careful what chemicals you use on your lawn and plantings. Insecticides are all poisonous to pets and most will not only kill pest insects but the already endangered bees and those beautiful butterflies.
2. Rat, mouse, slug and ant baits can also kill a dog, cat or child that eats them. If you must use them, make sure they are hidden away from your children and pets. (Or, since they also cause painful death to the creatures they are intended for, why not try one of the many natural repellents instead.)
3. Learn about the plants in your yard and home. Easter Lily can kill cats if they eat any part of the plant, and Azalea, Oleander, Caster Bean, Sago Palm, Tea Tree, and Yew are also toxic to animals and humans. Many pet birds die each year from chewing toxic plants, and so do cats, dogs and rabbits. There are literally hundreds of common plants that can be toxic to your pets. A quick web search can find you many lists.
4. Keep all fertilizers, cleaning chemicals and automobile fluids safely under lock and key. Some cleaning chemicals will only cost your pet or child a stomach ache if they get into them, but others can cause major burns, permanent injury, or death. If your car leaks antifreeze, get it fixed! Antifreeze is a major killer of cats and dogs especially as it has a sweet smell and taste. As little as one teaspoon can be deadly.
For pest control around my animals I use diatimatious earth from Earth Works, for ants they mix in calendula, and it seems to work well. I also use DE mixed with borax around the dog yard for flea control, and put apple cider vinegar in their drinking water, garlic and brewers yeast on their food, and bathe them with Dawn, the liquid dish soap, it kills fleas instantly! It also gets them clean, as Border Collies can have a bit of an oily coat, so it works well, smells good and does not have insecticides!
You can also use just plain Borax which you can buy at the grocery store and put a line around the foundation of your house to keep ants out.
For skunks under the house moth balls work well, but make sure your dogs cannot get to them – moth crystals also work to keep out gophers and squirrels – sprinkle them liberally down their holes run water to dissolved them in to the soil and cover the holes – they don’t come back for a long while if ever as they hate the smell!
For snakes there are many natural products, one that I use is Snake Away, it has Bentonite clay and essential oils that the snakes do not like to smell so it sends them away, it is sprinkled around the property line to keep them out and away, but the only down side is it also sends the good snakes away as well!
