What do you feed a normal horse to keep them healthy?
A lot is written about what "not" to feed horses who may be metabolic, IR or Cushing's but no one seems to want to share what is healthy for a "normal" horse, not a competitive horse, not a performance horse but a "normal" horse who is a family horse is ridden for pleasure, or is ridden on weekends, on trails or in an arena.
You start with the best quality cleanest hay you can afford, if a consistent source of hay, tested if possible, for NSC/Sugars and minerals, to that have fresh clean water available at all times and salt, prefer the Himalayan Rock salt you hang on a rope. I am not a fan of feeding it daily mixed in bucket feed, they know when they need it and will seek it out.
From the above you build on that, you do not need fancy "bag" feeds with chemical ingredients you cannot pronounce, all you really need is a good quality hay pellet (I prefer Mountain Sunrise Timothy) you can soak to which you would add a probiotic like our Equine Zyme and a vitamin mineral supplement like our High Point for grass hay and/or pasture fed horses.
What I feed my horses is the above and I also feed them an organic senior feed, usually one time daily in a small amount, which is more like a whole food. It is Modesto Milling Senior Feed non GMO and organic with alfalfa, oats, rose hips, kelp and more.
They do get a wet bucket per day on average with the soaked hay Timothy pellets and Speedi Beet for the fiber. To that I add Equine Zyme along with either Arizona Copper Complete or Best of the Best for their vitamins and minerals.
All of the "excesses" in today's bag feed for horses are what is helping to make them not healthy. The soy especially is causing a lot of overall body inflammation up to and including Cushing's!
Pretty simple, pretty healthy, and a good place to start!
